How to read a SANY model name and what it tells you

How to read sany model names

Model names are the fastest way to size up a machine on paper. They’re not the spec sheet, but they get you in the right ballpark. SANY follows a predictable pattern: the prefix tells you the product family, the numbers give a rough idea of size or class, and the letters after the numbers show configuration or variants.

Quick cheat sheet

  • Prefix shows the product family (SY = excavator, STH = telehandler, ST = skid steer).
  • Numbers approximate the size or class (16 ≈ 1.6 metric ton, 35 ≈ 3.5 metric ton, 335 ≈ 33-35 metric ton, 750 ≈ 75 metric ton).
  • Suffix letters indicate configuration or trim (LC = long carriage, U/C/H = series variants, PRO = pro or new-gen).

Use the model name to shortlist machines. Then pull the spec sheet to verify operating weight, dig depth, hydraulic flow, and capacity at height.

What the prefixes usually mean

Start left and work right. The first letters tell you which family to research.

  • SY typically means excavator. If you’re looking at digging, trenching, grading, or anything with a stick and boom, you’re probably looking at SY.
  • STH usually means telehandler. Think reach, placing pallets or material at height, and rough-terrain lifting.
  • ST and similar codes often mark compact loaders or skid steers.
  • SL, SSR, SW, SMG, or other letter codes appear on backhoes, wheel loaders, compactors, motor graders, or specialty lines.

What the numbers tell you

Numbers get you into the right size class, but treat them as rules as guidelines, and not gospel.

  • Two-digit numbers on small machines generally reflect approximate metric tonnage. For instance, 16 points to roughly 1.6 ton class, 35 to about 3.5 ton.
  • Three-digit numbers indicate larger classes and higher operating weights. Models like 215, 335, or 385 are medium-to-large machines.
  • Very large numbers, such as 500 or 750, are heavy machines for large earthmoving tasks.

Suffixes and what they mean

Suffixes change the machine’s behavior or market configuration and can vary slightly between families and product generations. They’re the next-level filter after family and size.

SuffixUsual meaning
LCLong carriage or long undercarriage for more stability and better load distribution
USeries/configuration identifier commonly used on U.S. market minis
CConventional series or standard configuration for certain markets
HHeavy or high-power configuration
PRO or new-genNewer generation or pro trim with updated features

Examples

  • SY16U
    • SY - SANY excavator
    • 16 - ~1.6 metric ton mini class
    • U-series configuration
    • C- conventional tail swing
    • LC - long carriage
  • SY335C LC
    • SY - SANY excavator
    • 335 - ~33.5 metric tons
    • LC - conventional series with long carriage for added stability
  • STH1056A
    • STH - SANY telehandler
    • 1st numbers: 10 - maximum rated capacity is 10,000 lbs
    • 2nd numbers: 56 - maximum reach of 56 feet
  • SW405K
    • SW - SANY wheel loader
    • 405 - equals 4 cubic yard bucket capacity
    • K - generation of SANY's lineup
  • SSR120HT/SSR120C-8
    • SSR - SANY single drum roller
    • 120 - metric tons
    • HT - high traction
    • 8 - generation of SANY's lineup
  • ST230V
    • ST - SANY Track Loader
    • 230 - machine's ROC (Rated Operating Capacity) 230 means that the machine's ROC at 35% is in the 2,300-2,600 lbs class size.
    • V / R - vertical lift vs radial lift
  • SMG200AWD or SMG200C-8
    • SMG - SANY motor grader
    • 200 - falls within the 200-299 horsepower class
    • 8 - generation of SANY’s lineup

Common mistakes and what to double-check

  • Don’t assume the number equals the exact weight. It’s a guide to size, not a replacement for the spec sheet.
  • Suffixes change hydraulic flow, undercarriage length, and cab options; confirm what a suffix actually does for that model.
  • OEM naming evolves. A letter that meant one thing three years ago could be repurposed on a new generation. When a spec matters, verify with your dealer and the latest PDF.
